Mount Tamalpais & Mountain Home Inn
A FEW WEEKENDS AGO, IN PART TO CELEBRATE MY THIRTIETH BIRTHDAY TOGETHER AWAY FROM TOWN, ERIC AND I DROVE FROM SANTA CRUZ UP PAST SAN FRANCISCO AND ONTO MOUNT TAMALPAIS. WE DUCKED AWAY FROM NASTY HIGHWAY 17 AND TOOK SCENIC HIGHWAY 9 THROUGH THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS, STOPPING AT LEGENDARY BIKER BREAKFAST STOP ALICE'S RESTAURANT. WE CONTINUED ON UP THE COAST THROUGH HALF MOON BAY AND PACIFICA, PAST THE CHICEST TACO BELL EVER (BUILT ON THE BEACH AND MADE OF GREY "DRIFTWOOD"), PAST FIELDS STARTING TO FLOWER, THROUGH THE SAN FRANCISCO TRAFFIC AND UP TO MOUNT TAM.
CHECKED INTO THE MOUNTAIN HOME INN FOR THE FIRST TIME, A WONDERFUL LITTLE TEN-ROOM LODGE AND RESTAURANT NEAR THE TOP OF MOUNT TAMALPAIS. OUR ROOM HAD A JACUZZI TUB (THAT ROCKED!), WOOD-BURNING FIREPLACE, AND A DECK WITH A GREAT VIEW OF THE BAY AREA. AFTER A QUICK LUNCH ON THE TOP DECK, WE WANDERED AROUND THE INN AND HAPPILY TOOK IN THE REDWOOD AND PINE FRAGRANCES, THE YELLOW FLOWERS BUDDING, THE DISTANT, MISTY VIEWS TO THE EAST AND WEST.
After it got dark, we lit the fire to warm up before heading out into the quiet for a few night photos. The next day we made it up to the top of Mount Tam, and the amazing 360-degree view it offered from the top.
It was so wonderfully relaxing, I can't stop thinking about the decks and that view!
