Strawberry Picking At Swanton Berry Farm
Just up Highway 1 are several pick your own fruit farms. I haven't been berry picking since I was a kid. Last week I went to Swanton Berry Farm to pick some strawberries and taste their handmade treats. While not the sunniest California day, the fog cover kept the temperatures cool and the colors seemed to pop against the grey sky. One of the old wooden buildings houses the farm stand and tasting room, full of organic jams and fresh strawberry desserts.
Unfortunately, Neil Young wasn't in residence that day. The fields were definitely already very picked over, so we ended up just buying another basket from the stand before leaving. I also picked up a jar of strawberry rhubarb jam (my favorite) and gobbled up a piece of strawberry cheesecake before I could even take a picture of it. It's nice and quiet along the Davenport coast, and the strawberry field was no exception. Our only company were a few other families in the distance and the flock of black and red birds that took off overhead as we were leaving. I hope to go back and visit the other farms soon when their fruit is ripe!
