Little Owl Italian Kitchen, Aptos

A new restaurant has opened up where Kauboi (and before that, Britannia Arms) was on Soquel Drive. It's called Little Owl Italian Kitchen & Bar, and though they're just getting started it seems like a promising addition to our local food scene. Here's the short story: The menu is painted onto the wall at the entrance. You order your food at the counter, take a number and seat yourself. A server brings your food and refills drinks once you're seated. There's an outdoor patio as well as the bar or dining room seating. The menu already has plenty of options, though the dessert menu wasn't ready when we dined there in August, which was sad for a sugar junkie like me, but probably good for my health...

The Little Owl features dynamic homemade pasta dishes, pizza, sandwiches and salads. And of course there's a make-your-own pasta option for those picky eaters in the crowd. The food is fresh and the prices are very reasonable, between $9-$14. We ordered the Agnello and Domenica house pastas and were surprised by the generous portions and rich flavors. I am not a fan of lamb, but I was told the lamb ragu was really good. My Domenica dish was a hearty and delish rendition of spaghetti & meatballs, with a sprinkling of fine cheese. I will definitely eat here again. Next time I'd love to try the Kale Caesar salad and Caprese sandwich.

Agnello - Rigatoni, lamb ragu, ricotta salata. Domenica - Fresh papparadelle, bolognese, meatballs, grana padano.
