Current Skincare Routine for Combination Skin
As I approach my 32nd birthday next month, I'm stoked to say that at least my skincare routine is feeling very adult. As much as I'd like to be a soap and water girl, I'm just not. I love products and enjoy the luxury of taking care of the most delicate skin on your body: your face. For the past six months or so I've been loving the same product combination, so my routine is finally fully rounded out and nearly perfect. "Perfect" to me means that I'm not looking around for anything else new or different. I'm happy with my skin (most of the time) and am not interested in every new product or claim. I think I've got this.
From left to right: BareMinerals Clay Chameleon transforming purifying cleanser, BareMinerals SkinLongevity vital power infusion, BareMinerals Smart Combination smoothing lightweight emulsion (trio from this collection), SuperGoop! CC Cream Daily Correct broad spectrum sunscreen, Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil, Alba Botanica Pore Purifying mini peel mask; not shown: Burt's Bee's Radiance Facial Cleanser, Boots Botanics All Bright Micellar Water.
Cleansing & Makeup Removal
I love wearing makeup, but I've really had to commit to removing it at night before bed. I used to not worry about it and just washed my face in the mornings, but I've really noticed that nightly washing and moisturizing (at least) leaves my skin so much clearer, smoother and brighter in the morning. Getting older is fun, right?
My favorite all-purpose cleanser for years and years was the bareminerals purifying foaming cleanser, recently discontinued. I don't mind too much though. Their new Clay Chameleon transforming purifying cleanser is a lovely and even slightly less drying alternative, with a crazy red clay texture that morphs with water into a whitish creamy cleanser. I keep this stuff on the sink to remove makeup and pollutants at the end of the day. In my morning shower I use Burt's Bee's Radiance Facial Cleanser, which is a close match for the old BareMinerals cleanser. It has just the right amount of slip and doesn't dry out your skin like many foaming face washes. I might rely solely on this stuff when my clay cleanser runs out.
When my eye makeup is out of control or I'm too lazy to tie back my hair and get drippy at the sink, I use Boots Botanics All Bright Micellar Water to sweep away leftover nightmares. It's inexpensive, the bottle is pretty, and doesn't leave any residue on the skin.
Moisture Moisture Moisture
Again, my favorite old bareminerals purifying cleanser was discontinued recently, but the replacement Smart Combination smoothing lightweight emulsion is really great, too. I'll definitely buy the full size bottle when this one runs out. What I love about this moisturizer is that it is SPF-free so I can use it day or night. It's hydrating but super-light, sinks in quickly and wears great under makeup. It was lightweight enough to wear in summertime, but has proven nicely hydrating this winter as well. My skin doesn't get too dry, but when it does I usually just use coconut oil overnight. Nothing really beats using oil to seal in damp skin moisture.
Protect & Treat
I used to use facial lotion with SPF, but I've learned that it's better to use a separate SPF product. Using a product with sun protection chemicals when you are not actually exposed to sunlight isn't a good idea, anyway. So in the morning after my moisturizer sinks in, I apply SuperGoop! CC Cream Daily Correct broad spectrum SPF 35+ sunscreen in light to medium tint. This stuff is liquid gold. I originally got it as a sample with another purchase and had to get the full size. It's lasted five months so far and remains a daily favorite. The light to medium coverage and self-adjusting shade are perfect, and it applies really well with just your fingers. It's not smelly and the texture is cooling and lightweight for a "cream".
Alba Botanica Pore Purifying mini peel mask is another superstar that I was pleasantly surprised by. I picked it up last summer at Marshall's and after loving it and frantically searching for it online, was relieved to find out that it's not been discontinued. The bottle is huge and I doubt I'll run out anytime soon though. I use this beta hydroxy acid mask weekly and have noticed improved clarity and smoothness.
One last product Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil, the much-touted blue Retinol oil treatment. I received it as an early Christmas present and it has a much-honored spot on my sink. It's very expensive, luxurious, and the ingredient list is impressive. But honestly, I haven't been blown away by the results. Maybe I do enough/too much exfoliating already, but I didn't see the improvements in my skin that so many YouTubers and bloggers raved about last year. I'll definitely use the bottle up, but I doubt I'll repurchase. Some things don't work for everyone, ya know?
Instead, I'll continue using the BareMinerals SkinLongevity vital power infusion. While it's not a retinol product, I do find that it's lightweight serum formula does as good a job as improving the clarity of the complexion as Sunday Riley night oil., if not even slightly more for my skin, at a lower price.
