BareMinerals Smoothing Lightweight Emulsion
I apologize for the longest product name ever, but I thought it was finally time to write up a review of the face moisturizer I have been using the longest - several years, which for me really says something. I almost never repurchase the same product more than once, since I'm always looking for something better - the "holy grail." But the Bareminerals Smart Combination Smoothing Lightweight Emulsion has been in my medicine cabinet for a long time. Well, it's original incarnation was as the Purely Nourishing Moisturizer, until they redid their skincare line early this year. When I ran out of my old bottle in February, I read about the new revamped line and got the trio of products to try (Clay Chameleon and Skinlongevity). This review is only about the moisturizer, which is only now starting to run low after several months of daily use.
"Bring your skin back to beautiful balance. This light-textured, oil-free moisturizing lotion replenishes hydration to leave skin feeling incredibly soft and ultra-smooth."
Let’s Talk Details
THE APPLICATION The lotion is definitely not "creamy." It is very lightweight and watery. Not run-down-your-arm watery, but by no means rich or heavy. It almost feels like you're rubbing water over your skin. It sinks in quickly and dries fast.
THE WEAR Many moisturizers have affected the application and wear of my face makeup, but this one does not. And it doesn't encourage oil production, like some seem to. When my cheeks are particularly dehydrated, I do prefer to add additional moisture in the morning so I don't get too dry during the day. But for my oily T-zone, this moisturizer is perfect. It even helps my makeup go on more evenly.
THE SCENT It is not unscented; this lotion has a very herbal scent, which the product description attributes to "bergamot and eucalyptus." I don't really think it smells like either of those things, just a very definite herbal-y smell, which fades after application. I really like the scent, but my mom hates it. To each their own, I guess. Sniff test it first!
THE PRICE $35 - fairly reasonable, as it lasts a long time.
Full ingredient list here. It hasn't been rated by the EWG, so I sat down and put each individual ingredient through the database. This product would most likely score a 1, except that it contains a handful ingredients that rate a bit unfavorably (Dimethicone, Myristyl Myristate, Sodium Metabisulfite, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, and sadly, the dreaded "Fragrance"). Since the product contains water, it also has to contain preservatives. After doing all this research, I realized this product could probably be a little cleaner than it is.
This is not an all-natural or organic product, but it is safer than many others out there, and the brand is cruelty-free. I recommend trying a sample or travel size of Bareminerals Smoothing Emulsion if you have oily/combination skin and are searching for a general daily moisturizer with no sunscreen or Vitamin A added. Super-sensitive skin may want to do a patch test first, due to some of the potentially irritating citrus extracts.
The Bareminerals Smoothing Lightweight Emulsion is a super lightweight, hydrating but non-greasy moisturizer, perfect for oily/combination skin and for the summer months. I've been using it for years because it a) doesn't clog pores b) wears really well under makeup c) doesn't contain sunscreen, so I can wear it at night or on days I don't go out in the sun.It leaves a weightlessly smooth soft finish, not tacky or heavy. You just feel fresh and clean after smoothing on this watery lotion. Sometimes it doesn't give quite enough moisture for my drier cheeks and under-eye area, so I'll mix in a drop or two of oil for those areas as needed.
